عن قسم الهندسة البترولية

النبذة التعريفية الهندسة البترولية

قسم هندسة البترول هو أحد أقسام كلية الهندسة والبترول وقد أنشئ القسم في العام الجامعي 1996-1997م كقسم للهندسة البترولية والهندسة الكيميائية مع بداية تكوين الكلية، وفي العام الجامعي 1999-2000م تم تجزئة القسم على قسمين، ليصبح قسم الهندسة البترولية قسماً مستقلاً بذاته.

وتخرج في القسم منذ التأسيس حتى العام الجامعي 2016-2017سبع عشرة دفعة بمجموع 921 مهندسا. حاليا سيتم تخريج الدفعة التاسعة بواقع 214 طالبا.

الرؤية

الريادة والتميز محلياً وإقليمياً في مجال الهندسة البترولية والبحث العلمي بما يسهم في خدمة المجتمع.

الرسالة

إعداد مهندسين متميزين محلياً وإقليمياً لممارسة مهنة الهندسة البترولية، وإجراء البحوث العلمية، ومواكبة التطور العلمي ومستجدات المهنة، وخدمة المجتمع، وتشجيع الإبداع والابتكار في مجال التخصص، وتعزيز الشراكة مع المؤسسات ذات الصلة والهيئات الحكومية.

الأهداف

  1. تزويد الدارسين بالمعارف والمفاهيم والنظريات والمهارات التطبيقية في مجال الصناعة النفطية.
  2. إعداد مهندسين متخصصين في مجال الاستكشاف والحفر والإنتاج وإدارة الحقول النفطية.
  3. السعي نحو جودة العملية التعليمية ودعم وتشجيع البحث العلمي في المجال الهندسي بما يسهم في حل مشكلات المجتمع وتنميته.
  4. إكساب الدارسين المهارات التكنولوجية التي تساعدهم على تطبيق التقنيات الحديثة في مجال النفط.
  5. إعداد مهندسين قادرين على ابتكار الحلول للمشكلات الهندسية وانعكاساتها الاقتصادية, و البيئية وتأثيرها في المجتمع .
  6. إكساب الدارسين قيم وأخلاقيات المهنة ومهارات التواصل والعمل الجماعي.
  7. تعزيز الشراكة مع  المؤسسات الحكومية والشركات النفطية العاملة في البلد بما يحقق الشراكة بين الجامعة والمجتمع.

    Brief description of Petroleum Engineering Courses

     CHEM 126: General Chemistry II (3-2-4)

    Course Description: Principles of chemistry including the states of matter, the gaseous state, the solid state, the liquid state, solutions, introduction to organic chemistry.

     

    ENG 211: Technical English (2-2-3)

    Course Description: The purpose of this course is to further develop students’ spoken and written communication skills in English in order to prepare them for future academic and professional life. Students are introduced to various petroleum industry terms and technical communications. The writing skills component includes training in composing various types of business correspondence to enable students to function well in the world of work. It also deals with the researching, organizing, and writing of technical reports in which students must be especially sensitive to their particular audience. The course’s oral skills component enhances students’ oral presentation skills as they will practice communicating a technical subject to a lay audience using a variety of presentational media. The electronic skills taught are intended to complement the written and oral skills by enabling students to use state-of-the-art internet and database search techniques to locate the information they require in order to produce written reports or presentations. 

     

    PET 211: Introduction to Petroleum  Engineering (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course is designed to familiarize the students with the fundamental aspects of petroleum engineering: Origin of petroleum and types. Petroleum exploration methods. Reservoir rock physical properties. Reservoir fluid properties. Method of oil extraction. Introduction to drilling engineering. Introduction to production engineering Well logging and formation evaluation. Oil and gas gathering and processing. Pipeline terminals and storage.

     

    PET 212: General Geology I (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Introduction to the fundamentals of physical geology. Composition and structure of the Earth, mineral and rook identification, plate tectonics, mountain building, earthquakes, volcanism, erosion and sedimentation processes Laboratory exercises concentrate on mineral and rook.

     

    PET 221: General Geology II (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Principles of physical stratigraphy; bio-stratigraphy and introduoductory sedimentation .Introduction to depositional systems, facies, unconformaties, stratigraphic nomenclature and correlation, geological structures. Laboratory exercises concentrate on mineral and rook identification and the interpretation of topographic and geologic maps. One field trip at student expense is requisite.  

     

    PET 222: Reservoir Rock Properties (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course deals mainly with theories and laboratory measurements of the rock: fundamental porosity, grain density, permeability, compressibility  and saturation properties; special core analysis such as mechanical, electrical properties; multiphase rock and fluid interactions, interfacial tension, capillary pressure, wettability and relative permeability properties.

     

    PET 223: Statics & Dynamics (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Definitions; vector analysis; moments and couples. Principles of static that deals with the equilibrium of bodies, that is, those either at rest or move with constant velocity. Friction. Center of mass, moment of inertia. Whereas dynamics is concerned with accelerated motion of bodies.

     

    PET 311: Strength of Material (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Definitions. Principles of Strength of materials that deals with the behavior of materials under axial force or lateral force or twist force and develops the concept of stress or strain. Thermal stresses and Strain, Column theory, and Tension stress and curvature.

     

    PET 312: Engineering Thermodynamics (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Basic concepts of thermodynamics, heat, work; PVT of pure fluids and equations of state, fundamental laws of thermodynamics applied to actual and prefect gases and vapors; energy concepts; thermodynamic properties of pure fluids; applications to flow processes; production of power from heat; basic refrigeration and heat-pump cycles.

     

    PET 313: Fluid Mechanics (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Definitions and fluid properties, Fluid static, Fluids in motion, The Bernoulli equation. Laminar and turbulent pipe flow. Transportation and metering of fluid.

     

    PET 314: Well Logging (3-2-4)

    Course Description: Comprehensive study of modem well logging methods, open hole and cased hole log interpretation methods. Production logging. Design of logging programs and examples of applications.

     

     PET 321: Reservoir Fluid Properties (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course deals mainly with theories and measurements of the fluid properties. Properties of dry gases – equation of state. Phase behavior of pure substances, two component & multi component mixtures. Properties of black oils. Gas-liquid equilibria. Ideal & non-ideal solutions. Flash calculations. Properties of reservoir waters. Darcy law, fluid types & compressibility. Types of reservoir fluid systems.

     

     PET 322: Petroleum Geology (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course covers the basic concepts of the generation of petroleum and natural gas in source rocks, their migration to reservoir rocks and their accumulation in various types of traps in the subsurface. The course will also introduce geological concepts and techniques to exploration and production of petroleum and gas.

     

     PET 323: Geophysics (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Introduction to Geophysical exploration methods, Gravity and magnetic methods, electrical and seismic methods, basic principles, equipment, data processing, geological interpretation and hydrocarbon traps detection.   

     

     PET 324: Drilling Engineering I (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course provides the students with an extended introduction to the drilling operations. Topics covered include drilling fluid functions, composition of drilling fluids, clay chemistry, mud rheology, drilling hydraulics design, and swab and surge pressures.      PET 325: Reservoir Engineering I (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Steady, unsteady and pseudo steady state single phase flow equations through porous media. Steady and unsteady superposition. Multiphase flow through porous media. Classification of oil reservoirs. Basic concepts of primary recovery. Estimation of hydrocarbon pore volume and recovery factor by volumetric method.

     

     PET 411: Storage and Transportation (2-2-3)

    Course Description: The basic principles and definitions in the oil transfer pipe, the definition of the fluid and Global positioning system units, the density of fluid specific weight, relative density, fluid viscosity, vapor pressure, surface tension, capillary action, the fluid pressure, the difference in pressure, the pressure estimated tol "h" (knighted pressure) compression of gas, founded the movement in the fluid, flow time and flow allazemna (stabilized and unstabilized), regular movement and the movement of irregular, continuity equation, the Bernoulli equation, fluid movement in the pipeline: laminar flow, Renolyd's Number, distribution of speeds, power losses for entry into force of the fluid in the pipe the energy losses of the entry into force of viscous, losses and other energy, fluid flow measurement: piezometer, Beto pipe, tube petc static, venture meter. Centrifugal pump, cavitation. Storage tanks (types, design calculations, testing, gauging, and corrosion control), the components of underground gas storage, characteristics of underground storage.

     

     PET 412: Production Engineering I (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course offers a basic knowledge of petroleum production systems, Inflow and out flow Performance relationship, flow of single and Multiphase fluid flow in vertical pipes (correlations of Poettman, Gilbert, Hagedorn and Brown), chock bean performance, flow-line performance, nodal analysis and production optimization. Laboratory sessions cover study of certain basic ASTM petroleum tests; distillation, flash point, pour point, vapor pressure, cloud point, viscosity, specific gravity, water content and sediments, and salt content of crude oil.

     

     PET 413: Natural Gas  Engineering (2-2-3)

    Estimation of gas reserves using different forms of the general material balance equation for gas reservoir. Prediction of gas reservoir performance subject to water drive. Derivation of the basic flow equations for real gas and their solutions in terms of pressure, pressure squared and pseudo function and applications for analyzing gas well testing. Analysis of hydraulically fractured gas well tests. Production forecasting and decline curve analysis. Gas field

     development including reservoir deliverability. Natural gas hydrates. Gas flow measurement.

     

     PET 414: Reservoir Engineering II (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Basic derivation of the general material balance equation. Drive indexes. Estimation of water influx using steady and unsteady-state models. Application of the general material balance equation for determining initial oil in place and gas cap size and water influx constant under different drive mechanisms. Reservoir performance prediction for solution gas drive, water drive, gas-cap drive, drainage and combination drive reservoirs using material balance approach. Water and gas coning in oil producing formations. Characterization of fractured reservoirs. Decline Curve Analysis.

     

     PET 415: Drilling Engineering II (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Drilling problems: lost circulation, pipe sticking, hole instability; formation pore pressures: types, origins and methods of estimating pore pressure; formation fracture pressure and methods of its calculation; down-hole pressure control: blowout detection, kill methods; casing seat selection, casing design: casing types and specifications, casing performance properties, casing design criteria, burst collapse, tension, effect of combined stress; landing and cementing practice: cement design, composition of Portland cement, cement additives, cement equipment, cement placement techniques, plugging and squeeze cementing design.

     

     PET 421: Health, Safety & Environment (3-0-3)

    Course Description: The principles of industrial safety, the initial principles in the fire, materials and equipment fire, the risk of oil extractive industry, electrical hazards in the oil industry mechanical hazards in the oil industry, the risk of liquidation operations, personal protective equipment, first aid, preliminary.

     

     PET 422: Computer Applications (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course is designed to teach students how to apply programming skills and available PC-software to solve problems in subsurface in well logging and subsurface mapping  in production, reservoir engineering and drilling.   

     PET 423: Well Test (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course include fluid flow concepts, pressure drawdown test analysis, transient and semi-steady state, variable rate tests, pressure buildup test analysis, Injection and fall-off tests, average reservoir pressure, finite and infinite reservoirs, flow barriers, well interference, pulse testing, Type curve matching. pressure analysis in anisotropic and fractured  reservoirs.

     

     PET 424: Enhanced Oil Recovery (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Introduction to current techniques of improved oil recovery. Mechanisms and performance calculations of waterflooding and immiscible gas injection. Principles of thermal recovery, chemical flooding and miscible gas displacement methods. 

     

     PET 425: Production Engineering II (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Acidizing method, matrix acidizing of sandstone, matrix acidizing of carbonate, formation fracturing pressure, predict the dynamic fracture geometry, predict the acid penetration distance, productivity of fractured wells, modeling of fracture geometry, hydraulic fracturing design, Methods of artificial lifting. Selection of equipment and artificial lift methods. Preparation of tubing intake curves for artificial lift systems. Design of electric submersible, gas lifting, hydraulic, jet, beam and plunger lift pumps. Pumping methods for unloading of gas wells.

     PET 511: Petroleum Economics (2-0-2)

    Course Description: Introduction to the standards and practices of economic analysis in the petroleum industry. Brief review of the principles of economic evaluation, typical decision making situations including risk analysis, alternative reservoir depletion schemes utilizing decline curve analysis, secondary stage development options, and various improved oil recovery methods. Analysis involves reserve estimation and forecasting of capital investment, operating cost, and manpower requirement

    PET 501: Directional Drilling (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Topics include why drill directionally, historical perspective, well trajectories and measurements, mud motors, directional equipment and deviation control, surveying tools and surveying calculations, bottom hole assembly and deviation control, tool face and dogleg severity.

     

    PET 502: Well Completion and work-over (2-2-3)

    Course Description: The student is introduced to subsurface operations needed to prepare the well for production after being drilled and cased. Parts covered include:-well completion designs based upon reservoir, mechanical and economic considerations, the production system, comprising bottom-hole, tubing, choke and surface facilities, subsurface production control, completion and work-over fluids, perforation, remedial cementing, sand control, and well stimulation operations.

     

    PET 503: Formation Evaluation (2-2-3)

    Course Description: The course addresses the open and cased hole logging and introduces the detection and evaluation of hydrocarbon-bearing formations with different interpretation approaches along with their limitations.

            

    PET 504: Surface production facilities (2-2-3)

    Course Description: The course focuses on principles of design and operation of the surface production facilities including two and three phase gas-oil separators, heater treaters and desalters, oil skimmers, produced-water treatment and disposal.

     

    PET 505: Reservoir Description (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Principles and techniques of petroleum reservoir descriptions. Subsurface data from geological and engineering sources.  Characteristics of sandstone and carbonate reservoirs. Measure of reservoir heterogeniety. Averaging and scale up of reservoir properties . Reserve estimation methods.

     

    PET 506: Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Behavior of naturally fractured reservoirs. Fractured carbonates, fractured shales, and fractured sandstones. Well testing and well log analysis of naturally fractured reservoirs. Fluid flow through fractured reservoirs, fractured reservoirs performance .

     

    PET 507: Heavy Oil Recovery (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Introduction to heavy oil and tar sands,  recovery processes include: thermal methods and non-thermal methods. Steam and oil flow, formation heating by hot fluid injection, cyclic steam stimulation, steam flooding, in situ-combustion. Tar sand recovery. Mathematical simulation of thermal recovery processes. Steam generation and distribution. Well completions. Steam injection. Surface and wellbore heat loss. 

     

    PET 508: Reservoir Formation Damage (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Overview of formation damage. Characterization of the reservoir rock for formation damage. Characterization of the porous media processes for formation damage. Formation damage by particulate processes. Formation damage by inorganic and organic processes.  Assessment of the formation damage potential. Formation damage models for field applications. Diagnosis and mitigation of formation damage.

     

    PET 509:  Horizontal Well Technology (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Topics include why drill horizontally, historical perspective, long, medium and short horizontal wells, torque and drag calculations, transport of drilled solids, horizontal well completions and stimulation, production difference, horizontal well testing, horizontal well costs and economics, horizontal wells in water flooding and enhanced oil recovery.

     

    PET 510:  Offshore Petroleum Technology (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Topics include an introduction to the development of oil and gas fields offshore, offshore leasing, offshore drilling, well completions, production facilities, pipeline, servicing.

     

    PET 511:  Underground Gas Storage (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Topics include natural gas storage in depleted reservoir, properties of gas storage reservoirs aquifers and salt caverns storage. Design, development and operation of natural gas underground storage fields.

     

    PET 512:   Under Balanced Drilling (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Topics include introduction to underbalanced drilling (UBD), what is UBD, why drill underbalanced, techniques and limitations, historical perspective, BOP equipment, types of drilling fluids used (air, gas, mist, foam, aerated mud), flow drilling, mud cap drilling, snub drilling, closed systems, candidate selection, general considerations while completion, safety in UBD, regulatory requirements, environmental issues, cementing, formation evaluation, risk management and down-hole problems .

     

    PET 513:  Coiled Tubing Technology (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Topics include history of coiled tubing, surface equipment, subsurface equipment, tubing forces, CT mechanical limits, CT working life, CT hydraulic performance, pumping operation, CT application in oil and gas industry (well cleaning, fishing and milling, zone isolation, stimulation and fracturing, sand control completions, flow management, cement plug and abandonment, sidetracking and re-entry).

     

    PET 514:  Environmental Control in Petroleum Engineering (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course is a study of environmental protection and regulatory compliance in the oil and gas industry. Topics include environmental impact and pollution mechanisms in petroleum engineering technologies; basic concepts regarding oilfield waste generation, toxicity, and environmental regulatory process; synergy between process productivity and environmental performance. Example regulatory agencies are introduced, and their role in permitting and compliance monitoring is presented. Legal and ethical responsibilities are discussed.

     

    PET 515: Introduction to artificial intelligence  Application (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course introduces the basics and fundamentals of artificial intelligence methods and their applications in the petroleum industry. Practical examples and case studies are discussed to illustrate the power of these methods. The course is concluded with a term project where students utilize AI methods to solve specific problems in various areas of petroleum engineering.

     

    PET 516: Production systems design and analysis (2-2-3)

    Course Description: This course utilizes Nodal Analysis techniques for the design and performance analysis of the production system starting from the formation up to the production separator. Topics include inflow performance relationships, multiphase flow in horizontal, vertical and inclined pipes, overall well performance evaluation considering various nodes within the production system, and applications to design and analysis situations. In addition to applications to flowing wells, the application of NODAL analysis methods is discussed to the most important two versions of artificial lift techniques: gas lifting and production by electrical submersible pumps.

     

    PET 517: Applied Reservoir Simulation (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Basic theory and practices in reservoir simulation, Formulation of equations governing single phase and multi-phase flow in porous media. Introduction to finite difference methods and solution techniques. Solutions of systems of linear equations. Applications using a black oil simulator.

     

    PET 518: Advanced geophysics (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Land and marine gravity, land and airborne magnetometer surveys. Processing and interpretation. Modern methods of seismic surveying, Processing and interpretation. Seismic data . Remote sensing.

     

    PET 519: Petroleum reservoirs in Yemen (2-2-3)

    Course Description: The purpose of this course to provide the student with knowledge about ( Geology setting, sedimentary basins ,  historical of exploration  and production of oil and gas, Petroleum system, classification of reservoirs of Yemen)

     

    PET 520: Production logging  (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Overview of the PL applications, and review of the many factors affecting the PL measurements  Presentation of the most common PL sensors ,In-situ spinner calibration., Single phase interpretation: velocity profile correction. Multi-phase interpretation principles and models. , Manual 2-phase interpretation. ,Computer aided interpretation: non linear optimization approach., Special applications: Selective Inflow Performance, Temperature

    PET 521: Stimulation and Sand Production Management (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Well stimulation by hydraulic fracturing: mechanics of fracturing, fracturing fluids and additives. Fracture job design, Propping the fracture, Acidizing: acid types and reactions,  Carbonate and sandstone acidizing techniques, Causes of sand production and methods of control, Gravel-pack design criteria, Nodal analysis applied to gravel-packed wells,  Production of horizontal wells.

     

    PET 522: Renewable energy and petroleum (2-2-3)

    Course Description: Fossil energy crisis and future alternatives. Historical stages of solar technology and science in the world and the Arab world, Yemen. Theories of sun formation and radiance properties and its effects on the environment. Theoretical calculations to measure solar radiation and its applications. Direct technological use and indirect solar energy in the oil sector. Complexes and solar thermal capacitors. Charts and graph and thermal calculations related to the work and the installation of solar plants complex. Methods of solar energy storage. Preliminary economic study to invest in solar energy. Modul of +sub and alternative energies in Yemen.

     

    PET 523: Alternative energies and their applications in the oil and gas industries in Hadhramout – Yemen (2-2-3)
