{"id":340,"date":"2026-01-29T10:03:44","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T07:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hu.edu.ye\/medfac\/en\/?p=340"},"modified":"2026-06-04T10:17:26","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T07:17:26","slug":"the-faculty-of-medicine-and-health-sciences-hosts-a-scientific-seminar-on-the-occasion-of-world-neglected-tropical-diseases-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hu.edu.ye\/medfac\/en\/details\/340\/","title":{"rendered":"The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Hosts a Scientific Seminar on the Occasion of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In celebration of <strong>World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day<\/strong>, and in recognition of the academic and social responsibility to address these pressing health challenges, the <strong>Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Hadhramout University<\/strong> hosted today, Thursday <strong>29 January 2026<\/strong>, the <strong>First Scientific Seminar on the Status of Neglected Tropical Diseases in Yemen: Challenges and Response<\/strong>, under the generous patronage of <strong>Mr. Salem Ahmed Al\u2011Khanbashi<\/strong>, Member of the Presidential Leadership Council and Governor of Hadhramout. The seminar was organized by the <strong>Hadhramout Health Organization (HHO)<\/strong> and supervised by the <strong>Public Health and Population Office on the Hadhramout Coast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, the Deputy Governor, <strong>Mr. Hassan Al\u2011Jilani<\/strong>, conveyed the greetings of Governor Al\u2011Khanbashi and emphasized the importance of convening this seminar, which addresses one of the most pressing health priorities. He stressed the need for integrated efforts among governmental, medical, and academic institutions to reduce the spread of these diseases and mitigate their health and social impacts affecting wide segments of society.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar also featured a virtual participation by the Deputy Minister of Public Health and Population for Primary Healthcare, <strong>Dr. Ali Al\u2011Waleedi<\/strong>, who highlighted that more than <strong>1.7 billion people worldwide<\/strong> are affected by neglected tropical diseases. He affirmed that the ministry is working toward their elimination through strengthening control programs, raising community awareness, promoting scientific research, and ensuring early access to treatment, given the heavy burden these diseases place on the national health system.<\/p>\n<p>In his welcoming address, the Dean of the Faculty, <strong>Prof. Dr. Saleh Awadh Bahoul<\/strong>, emphasized the importance of encouraging scientific research, enhancing community awareness, and strengthening cooperation among all stakeholders to combat these diseases. He called on medical students and researchers to apply their knowledge effectively in this vital field.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar, held at the faculty building, served as a <strong>scientific dialogue platform<\/strong> that brought together health policymakers, academics, and local and international specialists to discuss ways to strengthen national efforts in addressing the spread of these diseases, which threaten the health of millions.<\/p>\n<p>The scientific sessions, moderated by <strong>Dr. Ameerah Bafadhel<\/strong>, included specialized lectures addressing key themes such as the role of school health programs in prevention, the importance of community awareness and healthy behaviors, and the significance of continuous medical education. The sessions featured contributions from distinguished experts, including <strong>Dr. Marianne Compaor\u00e9<\/strong>, Director of the International Society for Neglected Tropical Diseases in London, and <strong>Dr. Zekra Al\u2011Nazili<\/strong>, former advisor to the World Health Organization. The seminar was also attended by health facility directors, representatives of civil society organizations working in the health sector, and members of the School Health Department on the Hadhramout Coast.<\/p>\n<p>This event embodied a practical model of effective partnership between the academic sector, represented by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the executive health sector, and civil society. It aligns with the faculty\u2019s vision of preparing medical and research professionals capable of addressing health challenges and contributing to the development of a strong and resilient healthcare system.
