Abstract

This study aims to examine the evolution of the medical profession by highlighting the nature of social medicine as a medical vocation within contemporary societies. It explores the foundational characteristics of the medical profession and identifies the dimensions of hegemony prevalent in modern medical discourse and practice. In this context, sociology plays a pivotal role in describing, diagnosing, and analyzing nearly every facet of human life, as well as interpreting the forces that influence it. Medicine is no exception to this rule; the field has undergone a significant historical transformation, evolving from a religious practice into a structured social activity, and ultimately attaining the status of a recognized profession. Adopting a descriptive-analytical approach, the study yields several key conclusions regarding the sociopolitical trajectory of the field. It argues that the advancement of the medical profession is not merely a product of pure scientific or cognitive progression; rather, it reflects a significant elevation in the social status of medical practice. This transition first emerged within European societies before proliferating globally. Furthermore, the study defines the medical profession through a sociological lens, elucidating the factors that have integrated medicine into the sociological domain. These factors include the role of social relations in defining concepts of health and illness, the social determinants of health, and the impact of systemic health policies.
