Overview Of General Medicine & Surgery

A preparatory committee was formed to study the possibility of establishing a faculty of medicine at Hadhramout University (HU). The committee decided to start the teaching process in the academic year 1997 / 1998. Therefore, the Faculty received the first batch of students in September of the same year and graduated in August 2003. After that, 2 academic programs were launched at the Faculty : Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) in 2012, and Medical Laboratory in 2013. The graduates are granted Bachelor Degree in the following fields:

  1. General Medicine & Surgery.
  2. Pharmacy.
  3. Medical Laboratories.

Vision

We strive to establish a modern faculty in teaching medical professions in Yemen that meets the needs of the community health at the national, regional and global levels.

Mission

To train and provide the graduates with knowledge, skills and behavior that enable them to cope with health challenges and changes at the national, regional and global levels.

Objectives

  1. To qualify the graduates to be psychologically prepared and well-behaved to work efficiently in the field of therapeutic, preventive and rehabilitative health care.
  2. To create the integrated personality of the graduate, and develop his/her ability to collect, analyze, conclude and solve health problems in the society as well as to think independently and to make the appropriate decision.
  3. To develop the graduates through work and life-long learning programs.
  4. To activate and direct the scientific research towards health problems in the region, and to use its results that are related to society.
  5. To contribute effectively by its students and academic staff as well as provide and develop direct health services for social development.
  6. To instill values and genuine humane achievements of the Arab Islamic Civilization into the graduate as a motive to build the future as well as develop the spirit and faith of the Arab nation future in order to make the graduate capable of facing and solving society problems.

Description of Courses :

(First level)

Introduction to Medicine and Emergency

This course is an introduction to medical education process in the problem solving methodology that is applied in the College in the field of Medical Sciences. In this course, the students study the methodology of learning through solving problem, the advantages of small group discussions and the steps of scientific research. They also study the principles of primary health care and its importance as the cornerstone of disease prevention, first aid procedures used in general emergencies and the physiological changes that occur in the body in response to the emergency situations including drug poisoning and misuse. Teaching and training are conducted through interactive lectures, small group discussions, seminars and practical training.

Human and Environment

In this course, the students study the relationship between the internal environment and the external environment through the study of main concepts, the internal physiological functions (internal balance), and the ecological understanding of the relationship between human and the environment as well as the impact of exposure to various environmental hazards on health. They also study the process of development during adolescence and youth stages, the effect of aging at the cell level and the human body in general, factors affecting fitness and the effect of exercises on various functions of the body. Teaching and training are conducted through interactive lectures, small group discussions, seminars and practical training.

Maternity and Childhood

In this course, the students study the different stages of fetus development during pregnancy until birth and the physiological changes in the reproductive system of the pregnant mother at all stages of pregnancy. They also study the components of health care during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal period for the mother and newborn, the development of the child in the physical, social and psychological aspects of infants and children, including: immunization and nutrition, with emphasis on the importance of breastfeeding. In addition, they study acquired and congenital disorders of development and natural growth. Teaching and training are conducted through interactive lectures, small group discussions, seminars and practical training.

(Second level)

Pathology

In this course, the students study the process of infection, inflammations, the associated pathological changes, and the mechanism of response to infections and injuries. They also study the common infectious diseases in the community, basic information of oncology, and pathological changes. It includes the study of carcinogens that are related to the occurrence and spread of cancer. Teaching and training are conducted through interactive lectures, small group discussions, seminars and practical training.

Hematology

In this course, the students study the basic information about the structure and functions of the various blood components and cells, signs, clinical symptoms, laboratory indicators of blood diseases and disorders in the body systems that have laboratory indicators of blood components as well as the principles of immunology, the structure and functions of the lymphatic system. They study diseases that are caused by the immune disorders, the relationship of immunology to tumors and the immune diagnosis of diseases in d. Teaching and training are conducted through interactive lectures, small group discussions, seminars and practical training.

Circulatory and Respiratory Systems

In this course, the students study the role of the circulatory system in pumping oxygenated blood and nutrients into tissues, and transferring waste to the organs that remove it from the body, as well as the structure of the circulatory system of veins, arteries and heart, physiological and pathological changes that are associated with cardiovascular diseases to identify the vital role of the circulatory system. They also study the structure and functions of the respiratory system, the mechanism of respiration , exchange and transport of gases, and common respiratory diseases. Teaching and training are conducted through interactive lectures, small group discussions, seminars and practical training.

Community Medicine 1

This course is taught for 30 weeks, in which the students study the principles of epidemiology, the methodology of scientific research, descriptive biostatistics and their applications to design the research plan. It includes the preparation of the research plan by working in groups and under the supervision of the teaching staff. Group presentation are presented at the end of the academic year. Teaching and training are conducted through interactive lectures, work groups, field work and self-study.
