On Thursday, 15/7/2021 the Viva-Voce Examination for the doctoral dissertation of the researcher Suzan Saeed Baghuita was held at the Higher studies Hall of Education college in Mukalla, Hadhramout University entitled (the effect of a guidance program in reducing the degree of Internet addiction among female secondary school students in Mukalla).
The examination committee consisted of:
- Mohsen Waheeb Ba-Abbad; Chairman and External examiner – University of Aden.
- Associate Prof. Abdel Hakim Mohammed Bin Break; Scientific Supervisor – Hadhramout University.
- Associate Prof. Frida Bahr Al-Dean Al-Amri; an internal examiner – Hadhramout University.
This dissertation sought to identify the prevalence of Internet addiction among secondary school students in Mukalla.
The researcher concluded by presenting the most important results, which are:
- The number of female students addicted to the Internet reached 145, which constitutes (20.61%) of the sample members. As for the female students who use the Internet for more than (5) hours per day, their number was (381), with a percentage of (54.10%).
- There are no statistically significant differences between the arithmetic mean of the first-level students of (82.68) and the arithmetic mean of the second-level students of (82.65) in the Internet addiction scale, and it also became clear that there are no statistically significant differences between the arithmetic mean of the first-level students of (2.63) and the arithmetic mean of the second-level secondary school students of (2.65) in hours of using the internet .
- There are no statistically significant differences at the level (0.05) between the arithmetic mean of female students of the scientific section of (84.38) and the arithmetic mean of female students of the Arts section of (80.92) in the Internet addiction scale.
In light of these results, the researcher recommended several recommendations and the most important are:
- Paying attention to the preparation of guidance programs to deal with the negative effects of the Internet.
- Implementing the guidance program with other samples of students who suffer from Internet addiction.
- Confirming the educational and awareness role of the Internet importance and its consequent negative effects, through periodic bulletins in schools.
- Increasing parental control by parents over their children as much as possible, and urging them to educate their children about the pros and cons of these networks in general.
At the end of the session, the dissertation was approved and accepted, with recommendations for amendments by the examination committee, and the researcher was awarded a PhD in Philosophy of Education from the Department of Educational Sciences.
The examination was attended by Dr. Saeed Salmeen Belafair; Dean of the Education College, Dr. Mohammed bin Qadeem; Vice Dean for Student Affairs, , and Dr. Shawqi Al-Dais; head of the Psychological Sciences Department at the college, a number of staff members and their assistants, a number of postgraduate students at the college, and the student’s relatives.
