Overview

The Educational and Psychological Sciences Department is the core department of the Faculty of Education in Mukalla. It is responsible for teaching educational and psychological courses across all faculty programs. The department offers two undergraduate programs: Guidance and Counseling, and Classroom Teacher, the latter being a collaborative program involving all scientific departments.

 

The Guidance and Counseling program aims to prepare qualified professionals capable of providing guidance and counseling services within educational institutions. It also seeks to supply society with specialists in psychological counseling, particularly to help address learning difficulties faced by students at various academic levels. The Classroom Teacher program was developed in alignment with the strategic plan of the Ministry of Education. It focuses on preparing teachers for the first three grades of basic education and involves contributions from most scientific departments in the faculty.

Graduates of the department are awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Education, with specializations in either Psychological and Educational Counseling or Classroom Teaching.

The department also offers five postgraduate programs:

  • – Master’s in Educational Psychology
  • – Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction
  • – Master’s in Educational Administration
  • – Ph.D. in Educational Administration
  • – Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction

The department boasts the largest academic faculty in the faculty, all of whom hold doctoral degrees in various educational and psychological disciplines. The doctoral programs have significantly contributed to the development of this academic body. Additionally, the department houses a psychological assessment lab equipped with modern psychological testing tools. Several cohorts have graduated from the department and are now employed across various sectors of society.

Mission

The department strives to prepare and qualify distinguished educational professionals at both local and regional levels. These professionals are equipped with the necessary professional and technical skills to effectively teach and manage educational institutions in accordance with comprehensive quality standards. The department also aims to conduct scientific research to address educational challenges, provide educational and psychological consultations and guidance, and contribute to educational development in line with contemporary advancements that reinforce societal values and meet developmental needs and aspirations.

Objectives

  1. To prepare teachers with educational and professional competencies in the field of educational sciences, capable of adapting to scientific advancements and cultural changes.
  2. To qualify teachers who can effectively address the challenges and problems facing the education sector.
  3. To train researchers capable of conducting scientific research in educational sciences and addressing learning issues.
  4. To meet the needs of the local and regional labor market with specialists in educational and psychological counseling.
  5. To contribute to providing scientific and educational consultations to institutions and agencies related to the department’s specializations.
  6. To supply society with postgraduate education outputs (Master’s and Ph.D.) in educational sciences.
  7. To design special programs for in-service teacher training in coordination with relevant authorities.
  8. To enhance the competencies of unqualified in-service teachers through specialized programs and by guiding student research in this area.
  9. To fulfill the department’s educational and enlightening role through scientific research, postgraduate studies, and continuous professional development programs.

Curriculum of the Bachelor’s Program in Psychological and Educational Counseling

The curriculum of the Bachelor’s Program in Psychological and Educational Counseling consists of 139 credit hours, which students complete over eight academic semesters. These hours are distributed across three core requirement categories, as outlined in the table below.

Course Coding and Numbering in the Curriculum of the Bachelor’s Program in Psychological and Educational Counseling

Courses in the Psychological and Educational Counseling program are coded with the prefix “PSC”, which refers to the Bachelor’s Program in Psychological and Educational Counseling. The course numbering consists of three digits, each representing the following:

  1. The first digit (hundreds place) indicates the academic year in which the course is offered. For example, the number 1 refers to the first academic year.
  2. The second digit (tens place) represents the semester in which the course is taught. The number 1 refers to the first semester, while 2 refers to the second semester.
  3. The third digit (units place) indicates the sequence of the course within the semester according to the curriculum structure.

University Requirements:

These are mandatory courses that all university students must complete, regardless of their specialization.
