تأسس قسم اللغة الإنجليزية في عام 2008م بنظام البكالوريوس يدرس الطالب فيه ثمانية فصول في أربع سنوات.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course was developed in the Faculty of Education- Socotra as a core course for all students admitted to the undergraduate program in English. Traditionally, it is offered at the beginning of the first semester of the first year. The course topics are supposed to be selected to provide the student with the basic pronunciation information that are necessary to pronounce, polish and correct the sounds and pronunciation of the Arab students by offering the effective English pronunciation system with excessive practical exercises.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will focus on the writing skills required at the BA level. It will familiarize students with the devices needed for effective communication in the medium of writing. They will learn how to organize their writing at the sentence level (using linking words and phrases), and at the level of short paragraphs. It will further stress the skills a writer needs to approach and accomplish particular writing tasks such as writing letters and applying for a course study.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course on fiction I introduces the student to the genre of novel and Fiction II provides the scope for an in-depth study of a novel. The novel is a literary form that is perhaps more ‘visible’ to the public eye, as cinematic adaptations or TV programs based on novels are very common. However literary appreciation of the novel calls for rich reading experience and sensitive reading skills. Novels which draw from the experiences of whole generations and societies will open to the student new vistas in looking at the world around him/her and making sense of the complex interplay between humans and the society. It brings to the students an ability to look at others and thus understanding themselves in a deeper way. The novel literature of English has much to offer to the student by way of developing literary sense, critical evaluation skills and complex modes of expression.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course will talk about segmental phonology, and supra-segmental phonology, both of them approached from the angle of structural linguistics. The course is intended to be both content- and practice-oriented. Segmental Phonology (Phonetics and Phonology; Phone, phoneme and allophone: definitions, examples, and appropriate use of linguistic conventions in representing them such as,“[ ]”, and “/ /”, Some important allophonic variation rules involving, for example, the voiceless plosives and the lateral phoneme / l / in English; The principles of phonemic analysis and practice in applying them to data from English (and also from Arabic, if possible). Supra-segmental Phonology (Word Stress: some guidelines for recognizing word stress, Stress shift; Tone and intonation and how they change meaning).

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will focus on the process of writing required at the BA level. It will help students how to go through the process of drafting, rewriting, and editing when they undertake writing tasks such as writing reports, writing for a newspaper, (sequencing information), writing a speech (planning for writing and speaking), writing a dialogue (layout of dialogue) and writing narratives (telling a story). They will also be introduced to the skills of writing an essay.

In the study of drama, students are trying to make a literary reading of a creative work that was originally written for performance. This is at once a difficult and an exciting task. It creates in the student an awareness of how literature and performance are related. It helps the student to look at literature from a totally different angle and to appreciate the practical value of literature. Through this course the student is familiarized with the literary face of the great dramatic tradition of English. In Drama I the students take up the study of one Shakespeare play.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Some of the major areas of future use of language for the English student would be print journalism, electronic media, official document and report writing and written communication through electronic and paper medium. These areas call for a command of the non-fictional prose language of English, different from the fictional register. The students are given the opportunity to understand the communicative, descriptive, narrative, argumentative and persuasive functions of English in creative pieces of writing. The familiarity with the vocabulary and structures of English in such situations is expected to provide a firm grounding in the use of English in many real-life contexts.

This course provides students with a theoretical framework for teaching English as a second and as a foreign language in a principle way. It offers a historical overview of the different approaches to language teaching and acquaints them with the major methods discussed in the literature. It introduced them to communicative language teaching and discusses issues such as communicative ability, classroom interaction, teaching vs. learning, content vs. skill. Against this background, it deals with the principles of teaching listening, speaking, reading, writing and how to integrate these four language skills in language teaching. It discusses language teaching techniques and how they relate to the different approaches to language teaching. It also deals with class management focusing on such topics as large classes, student grouping in class, individual differences and class control.

This course is intended to introduce students to quantitative and qualitative methods procedures in research as applied to the field of education. The students will be exposed to such fundamental and important steps in conducting research such as, planning and formulating the research, developing of the problem statement and research purposes.
