Mukalla – The Honey Bee Center at Hadhramout University recently held its second council meeting, chaired by Dr. Mohammed Abu Bakr Muqbil, Director of the Center, with the participation of council members and heads of the center’s departments.

The meeting reviewed several key issues, foremost among them preparing a comprehensive assessment study on the current status of beekeeping in Hadhramout Governorate. The proposed study aims to evaluate the sector’s challenges, opportunities, and development needs, providing a scientific basis for future initiatives that support beekeepers and improve honey production.

Participants also discussed mechanisms for strengthening cooperation between the Honey Bee Center and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Marine Biology, with a focus on expanding joint research, academic collaboration, and community-oriented projects related to apiculture and environmental sustainability.

In addition, the council examined a proposal to establish a training and research apiary within the Hadhramout University campus. The planned facility would provide a platform for practical training, scientific research, and applied learning, while supporting the development of the beekeeping and honey-production sector.

The meeting comes as part of the center’s strategic efforts to advance the beekeeping industry, promote scientific research and institutional partnerships, support the quality and marketing of local honey products, and strengthen the capacities of beekeepers and others working in the sector. Through these initiatives, the center seeks to contribute to sustainable agricultural development and enhance the economic value of one of Hadhramout’s most renowned agricultural products.
