Hadhramout University has announced the launch of a series of cultural and awareness seminars targeting male and female students across the University to raise awareness of the health, psychological, social, and economic harms associated with qat consumption and drug abuse.

According to a circular issued on Wednesday by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs to the deans of the University’s colleges, the program will be implemented by the Volunteers for Development Foundation in coordination with the Hadhramout Drug Control Administration and the University’s General Directorate of Student Activities.

The circular instructed the relevant departments within the colleges to coordinate closely with the General Directorate of Student Activities to ensure the successful implementation of the program and maximize student participation.

Under the announced schedule, the first seminar will be held on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in Bawazeer Hall at the University Housing Colleges Complex. The event will target students from the faculties of:

  • Arts and Humanities
  • Environmental Sciences and Marine Biology
  • Administrative Sciences
  • Women’s College

The second seminar is scheduled for Sunday, 1 November 2026, and will take place in the Law Faculty Hall at the Al-Mustaqbal Complex. It will be directed toward students of:

  • Law
  • Computing and Information Technology
  • Open Learning

This initiative forms part of the University’s broader efforts to promote health awareness and positive behavioral practices among students, particularly in light of increasing concerns regarding the spread of qat and drug use and their negative impact on academic achievement, personal well-being, and social development.

Through such awareness programs, Hadhramout University seeks to foster a safer and healthier educational environment while encouraging students to adopt responsible lifestyles that support their academic success and future aspirations.
