Hadhramout University has contributed to an international report published by University World News entitled “Beyond the Crossfire: Universities Are Being Hollowed Out,” which examines the challenges facing higher education institutions in several conflict‑affected countries across the Middle East, including Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Turkey.
The report featured contributions from Dr. Lotfi Bin Dahman, Director of the Center for International Relations, and Dr. Saeed Al‑Amoudi, Director of the Information Technology Center, who discussed the current state of higher education in Yemen. Their contribution highlighted the major challenges confronting Yemeni universities under current circumstances, particularly limited resources, declining research opportunities, the migration of academic talent, and the resulting impact on educational quality and universities’ role in serving society.
The report noted that the effects of conflict on higher education extend beyond damage to buildings and infrastructure, encompassing the erosion of institutional capacity, declining scientific output, reduced enrollment rates, and shrinking opportunities for international academic cooperation. It emphasized the need to strengthen investment in higher education as a fundamental pillar for development, stability, and post‑conflict societal reconstruction.
Hadhramout University’s participation in this report reflects its growing presence on international academic platforms and its commitment to conveying the realities of higher education in Yemen to the global academic community. Such engagement contributes to expanding opportunities for international cooperation, strengthening partnerships, and supporting efforts to advance education and scientific research.
