Bridging the gap between theory and practice, the Student Debates Program at Hadhramout University has emerged as a distinguished initiative that extends far beyond the boundaries of traditional competition. It has created an academic environment dedicated to developing students’ leadership potential, promoting a culture of constructive dialogue, and strengthening critical thinking, public speaking, and persuasive communication skills through a comprehensive program that integrates training, preparation, and structured competition.
The program began with a series of selection interviews for students wishing to participate. These interviews assessed applicants’ willingness to learn, potential for personal growth, and readiness to engage in an academic environment founded on respectful dialogue and intellectual exchange. Successful candidates then advanced to an intensive phase of academic and practical preparation.
Throughout the training stage, participants received specialized instruction in the principles and rules of debating, logical argument construction, persuasive speaking, issue analysis, and effective communication. The program also emphasized the ethics of dialogue, respect for differing viewpoints, and evidence-based discussion, enabling participants to enter the competitive rounds with confidence and professionalism.
Following the completion of the training phase, participants advanced to the closed debate rounds, where they applied the knowledge and skills they had acquired. The highest-performing teams then qualified for the open debate rounds, where competition became increasingly challenging before culminating in the final debate between the top qualifying teams.
More than a contest for rankings and awards, the Debates Program represented an educational initiative designed to cultivate students capable of analytical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and expressing their views with confidence, responsibility, and respect for opposing perspectives. Through this approach, the program contributes to strengthening a culture of dialogue within the university community while reinforcing the values of constructive disagreement and intellectual openness.
The program was implemented under the direct supervision of Fatimah Al-Shaer, Head of the Debates Division at the Political Forum, who oversaw every stage of planning and implementation, including participant selection, training sessions, debate rounds, and the final competition. This well-organized framework played a key role in achieving the program’s objectives and ensuring its overall success.
Ms. Al-Shaer praised the participants for their commitment, discipline, and remarkable progress throughout the program. She commended their ability to construct logical arguments, manage dialogue effectively, and engage with opposing opinions respectfully and professionally, reflecting the program’s success in developing essential leadership and communication skills.
The program concluded with a closing ceremony held under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Saeed Khanbash, President of Hadhramout University. The ceremony featured a presentation highlighting the program’s major milestones, followed by the final debate between the qualifying teams. Participants, trainers, judges, and members of the organizing committee were honored in recognition of their valuable contributions to the success of the initiative.
Through its educational and developmental impact, the Student Debates Program represents a practical model for preparing future leaders by combining academic training with practical application and healthy competition. It reflects Hadhramout University’s commitment to empowering students with the skills of critical thinking, responsible dialogue, and effective communication, while fostering a generation capable of making meaningful contributions to academic life, society, and future leadership.
